Sở hữu kịch bản được viết bởi nhà văn nổi tiếng Kim Eun Sook, The King: Eternal Monarch (tựa Việt: Quân vương bất diệt) là một bộ phim giả tưởng về hai vũ trụ song song. Trong đó, một vũ trụ là nền dân chủ giống như Hàn Quốc hiện đại và vũ trụ kia là một đế chế được cai trị bởi một vị vua duy nhất. Để chiến đấu và đóng cánh cửa giữa hai thế giới, người cai trị Đế chế Hàn Quốc - Hoàng đế Lee Gon (do Lee Min Ho thủ vai) đã hợp tác với Jung Tae Eul, một thám tử sống ở thời hiện tại Hàn Quốc (do Kim Go Eun thủ vai) để hoàn thành nhiệm vụ bất khả thi này.
